Mister Winter may have been lurking outside, but things were heating up inside Everett’s Cactus Moon Saloon as high-ranked players from Tacoma’s Home Plate Tavern were preparing for a heated battle against the newly-named Unlimited Cup Holders, Cactus Moon. Last month, the Cactus team waltzed into the Cloud 9 and promptly stole the 7-foot trophy out from under a Cloud 9 team that had held the cup for quite some time.
The Home Plate invited their best shooters to represent them in this high-stakes endeavor. Melvin Cherry, Rich Sutton, Willy Walker, and Eric Scott. They would be facing a very tough Cactus Moon team including Todd Jordan, Peter Clark, Dave Bresee, and Juan Ramos.
As the payers were warming up, you didn’t have to look too far for a sporting event - all 30-something TVs were showing some different game. Before the Cup Challenge got started, we watched M&K Promotions set up their karaoke equipment for Cactus’ Saturday night singing session.
Now, I’ve been to many cup matches, but this is my first Unlimited Cup and it was everything I thought it would be. First, I noticed during warm-ups, the respect and camraderie all eight players held for each other. But once the battle started, it was all business, baby!
Both teams would take turns winning most of the afternoon, but every time the Home Plate would pull away, Cactus Moon would step it up and get it back. However, once the dust settled and all 33 games had been played (it’s a race to 17 games), Cactus Moon retained the gigantic Medallion-sponsored trophy. Congratulations guys on a great battle! We hope to see another incredible Unlimited Cup challenge very soon as they await their next victims.
