SPORTY’S BEEF N BREW; EVERETT, WA
Dog Fight big as ever

By Ty Hughes

After dropping off the wives and girlfriends at Cactus Moon for the Cat Fight early New Years Day, the guys all converged on Sporty’s Beef and Brew, further up the road, for a real Dog Fight.

Yep! On the docket was the infamous (and growing) annual Dog Fight where men will be men and girls are scarce. The poor girls who worked the floor during Sporty’s all-male shoot had my sympathies as they were efficiently harassed by a roomful of men. They definitely held their own with confidence and efficiency.

Twenty eight teams, or 56 players, gathered together, some from as far off as South Tacoma to be a part of history on this fine day. Several were draggin’ buns after a lively night of Jaeger shots and whoopin’ it up to welcome in the new year. Six dart boards sat quietly awaiting the onslaught of action soon to commence.

Lucky Pence, an iconic figure within the game for decades, sat patiently taking sign ups, readying himself to manage the 2008 annual Dog Fight. Unfortunately, Lucky can no longer play darts, due to an arm injury, but his involvement in the game continues to influence players far and wide.

There were over ten Grand Masters on hand, warming up to take the competition by storm. Their presence and expertise was not lost on the field of players who knew that every dart must count in their quest for the championship.

Lucky ran the charts in keeping with his typical efficient standards and by 6:30pm, most of the Northenders and Eastsiders were effectively eliminated from the field, leaving three teams in the hunt. Two of these teams hailed from Kent to Tacoma. After Peter and Ryan handed Rick and Dad a third place finish, they set their sights on the championship round versus Melvin and Chuck, who sat patiently in the Winner’s bracket. Taking them to six games, Peter and Ryan managed to divert Melvin and Chuck from their winning ways, landing a spot in the annuls of Dog Fight lore as champions for 2008.

Congratulations guys on a day of extreme darts and good times. These were the final results;

1st Place: Peter and Ryan, $400
2nd Place: Melvin and Chuck, $200
3rd Place: Dad and Rick, $100
