CACTUS MOON; EVERETT, WA By Ty Hughes Synonymous with ringing in the sparkling new year for 2008, was the 19th annual Cat Fight. This particular all-female darting tradition got its start way back in 1989 and continues today as one of the year’s most popular events. The Cat Fight has seen many faces, both new and familiar, over the years. There were even a few ladies that have been around since its humble beginnings almost twenty years ago. Over the years, the Cat Fight has had a few different homes, not to mention its original birthplace; Kodiaks Pub, when it was located further south in Everett. These days, Cactus Moon is the proud sponsor of the Cat Fight tradition and Cindy Gilbert confidently carries the baton as tournament director each year. It’s a great combination that works and the girls show up with anticipation each New Years Day. Well, New Years Day 2008 would prove to be just as exciting as ever as 32 women gathered after a long night of celebration. One by one, they scuffled into the Cactus Moon. Some looking a bit ragged as if they had to peel themselves out of bed, if they even met their pillows at all the night before. Others were bright eyed and raring to go. Cindy had six humongous trophies on display, as if the girls needed any incentive to kick some butt at the boards. Bragging rights are more coveted here than anything else. Past year’s winners are quite vocal about their status as Cat Fight Champions and believe me, they remember practically every dart thrown that earned them the moniker. Cactus Moon offers seven evenly spaced dart boards with tons of room to roam in their dedicated dart room. All-U-Can-Eat Tacos were appreciated by those able to stomach food at all. Ray, Heidi and Kristen held down the fort from behind the bar, making it a point to cruise the room regularly to fulfill the needs of their faithful customers. Janice and Teresa made a heck of a mother/daughter team for the day and were excited to have a day of shooting together. Jackie paired up with Linda and they set their eyes on the goal. Even Kim Weaver came out for the day, exclaiming that she was back! She looked better than ever with a smile for all her friends. The competition was truly fierce, but mostly just fun. It was a great day for the 19th Annual Cat Fight 2008. After a long day and an amazing display of skill and camaraderie, your 2008 Cat Fight Champions emerged from the pack. Congratulations to these fabulous darters on your success; 1st Place: Naomi Bentz and Yelena Sepravskaya 2nd Place: Jimmie Martin and Michelle McGee 3rd Place: Tracy Jack and Cindi Zinkand Great shooting by everyone. Be sure to congratulate this year’s Cat Fight Champions; Naomi and Yelena, who played rock, paper, scissors instead of corking on the final match. |
