Local Woman Raises Funds For Cancer Walk

Gloria Conway, known just as G to her friends, walked away with $534 to put toward the Three-day, 60-mile Walk for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, after Daves Place in Phoenix held a Fish Fry and Oyster Shucking Bash to raise the money.

I was shocked when we finally got the tally, G said. I couldnt believe it from that little bar! And, almost all of that was raised just between 1-4pm.

To date, over $1,400 out of the $2,000 needed for Gloria to participate in the walk came from Daves Place and its customers. As the time of this printing, shes raised $1,802 so far.

Just one of the many fundraisers Daves Place has become well known for, this event included raffles and drawings for everything from hats to home cooked Mexican food, deliverable right to the winners door; this, in addition to some great food and fun times. Better yet, Daves Place and the regulars donated everything for the bash.

Another thing G is doing to raise the funds is to make pink leather roses, which she sells at the bar. Shes made and sold the leather roses in a variety of colors for ages, but decided to offer pink ones only until her goal is met.

G, a cake decorator at a local grocery store, doesnt know anyone personally with breast cancer and is not a regular walker; but, when she heard about the Three-day 60 Mile, she instantly knew she wanted to do it.

Its weird, I just felt that it was something that I needed to do, Gloria said.

At first, Gloria endured the usual razzing, but once people realized that she was serious, she began receiving an outpouring of support. Often, from people with stories to tell about how they or someone they knew had been affected by the disease that strikes over 200,000 women and 1,500 men per year in the United States alone.

I am known at Daves Place to be a bit loud and outspoken, and when I first decided to do this walk, there were quite a few non-believers, Gloria said. No one believed I would actually do this to begin with, let alone finish the sixty mile trek.

Well, as the walk draws nearer and her constitution stronger, G says the money is coming from the most unexpected places. Like the saying now goes, money talks, G walks, she says. Being the person I am, that sounds like a challenge to me.

People are offering her cash encouragement, and they tell her to hold on to it to help her through the last 20 miles. Her response: Meet me at the finish line with an ice cold beer.

Good Luck, G.

Drop by Daves Place at 2710 W Bell Rd. if youd like to make a donation, or even just to offer G some encouragement.
