Cactus Moon; Everett, WA – New Year’s Day Cat Fight at Cactus
By Janis Baker
Yep, that’s right, a Cat Fight – in a bar of all places! Who woulda thought? Well I’ll tell ya who, the Cactus Moon did. Well, actually Judy Carnine did, 23 years ago. Here’s a little history for ya, and no, it won’t be boring, hopefully.
Judy Carnine originated the Cat Fight, a women’s dart tournament 23 years ago at Kodiak Ron’s so the women had something to do while the men were watching football. My, how times have changed! Originally, the tournament traveled from bar to bar until Cindy Gilbert took over as it’s permanent director at Kodiak Ron’s. It stayed there for awhile, (no, I didn’t ask how long), before coming over to Cactus Moon, which has become its permanent home! The longest player of the Cat Fight currently is Kristen Young, who’s been coming every year for 15 years!
I guess some of the guys just didn’t care enough about football because years later, there came the Annual Dog Fight, an all-men’s shoot that runs concurrently at Sporty’s. I heard they had 20 teams this year. I imagine they had the game on a few of the TVs and some of the matches took awhile during those ever-crucial football plays… who knows and who cares? This is about the WOMEN!
The Cactus Moon ended up with 24 teams for the $650 added – not the normal $500 gtd, a nice surprise.
Cindy ended up handing the microphone over to Jimmie Martin, like she needs one, and off we went to the boards to battle. I questioned Jimmie about her need for a microphone, she said she didn’t want to strain her vocal cords. Really Jimmie?!
She did a great job getting people to the boards to shoot, only needing an occasional reminder to get it moving (I think she was getting paid hourly). She had no problem getting me to my matches, all TWO of them! Sorry Jamie.
Renee Davis’ parents, Neil and Linda were there. They were sitting at my table, watching and just kept drinking faster and bigger beers. They must have been nervous watching Renee kick some booty.
Finally it was down to just three teams clawing and scratching their way through to the top of the cat post. And this is how the Cactus Moon’s Annual Cat Fight 2010 finished up: 1st Place was Kim and Jill with $270, 2nd Place was Trish and Sheree with $180, 3rd Place was Danielle and Ann (mom and daughter) with $120.
The waitstaff was amazing! They were always right on it with drinks and/or food. Thanks to Kristen, Stacey, Kane, Faith and Hilary for the great job you guys did.
I have just one comment for GT for next year: It’s the first of the NEW YEAR! Just because you get the trophies at the end of 2009 doesn’t mean they’re for the year 2009! We still love ya for trying!
Tami Payne contributed with a joke: A man touches his wife’s arm seductively and she says, “Not tonight, I have a gynecologist appointment tomorrow”. A few minutes later, he touches her arm again and asks, “Do you have a dentist appointment tomorrow?”
