Dog Fight packs Sporty’s

By Ty Hughes

While the cat’s away, the mice will play.

In conjunction with the 20th Annual Cat Fight at the Cactus Moon, Sporty’s Beef & Brew hosted their Annual Dog Fight to entertain the boys while the girls enjoyed each other’s company.

It was officially the first day of 2009. The hangovers were being nursed ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú mostly with the hair of the dog. Fitting, since this was, in fact, the Dog Fight.

Lucky Pence, one of darts’ most experienced figures on the scene, ran the tournament and began by taking sign ups. He signed up an unprecedented 33 teams for this year’s event and quickly had the charts drawn up and the tournament underway. If anyone can manage a chart and tournament of this size, it would have to be Lucky. But he was quick to give props to Tom Williams, who is just as efficient, but wasn’t in attendance this time. Ah, the stories these guys could tell.

With only five dart boards and 33 teams, there were some sideways glances about when they might be getting out of here, but Lucky was confident that time would not even be an issue.

And so it began. An incredible day of darts, camaraderie and beer farts (Thanks for your contribution, Jim!). Boys will be boys, that is for sure.

Dart players came all the way out from South Tacoma, Federal Way, Burien and Renton to join in the fray. That’s an impressive distance to travel for anything. We salute those players for making the trek that day. I’m sure they all had a blast at Sporty’s. At least there was no shortage of competition?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ unless your name is John Husman. Poor guy.

Well, in the end, it was that poor guy, John, and his partner Josh who took top honors in the Dog Fight 2009, not to mention $400 cash! Congrats guys!

Ed and Justin landed second place, taking home an extra $250. Moku and Ryan at least paid for their road trip, taking third and $120. Willy and Billy secured fourth, plus sixty bucks.

Lucky accomplished exactly what he had set out to do and ran a great tournament. He had the final match being played just five hours after it all started. Kudos to Lucky and his skills in that area.

The Dog Fight turned out to be a massive success at Sporty’s and we look forward to this tradition continuing well into the future. Thanks to Joe and Jack, Sporty’s owners, for their commitment to the players and the sport of darts.
