Mixed Memorial Cup finds a challenger

Home Plate at Cloud 9

By Joseph Mathias

Saturday, May 1, 2010; Home Plate’s Willy Walker, Melvin Cherry, Janis Baker and Linda Owen made their way down to Kent to challenge Cloud 9’s Mixed Memorial Cup holders; Peter Clark, Beverly Rhoades, Darren Houweling and Lyndsey Green.

The match started off without much ado and Willy didn’t waste any time opening with a Hat Trick. Then he hit another one as Melvin and the girls set him up to take out a 70 and win the first game. Willy didn’t let up either, leading off the second game with yet another Hat Trick, but this time Melvin fired back with his own Hat Trick, setting up Janis to take out a 32 and take a two-game lead.

In game three, Cricket, Beverly and Peter took turns nailing 6-counts, helping Cloud 9 to their first win for the day, 2-1.

Willy, proving why he is one of the best, opened up game four with a 7-count despite Darren’s back to back 5-counts, and then hit a black bull to take game four and make it 3-1, Home Plate. The teams would trade wins until game eight, when Melvin and Willy powered through their respective games, and Low Tons from Linda helped to extend their lead 6-3.

Finally, in game 12, Peter and company said enough is enough. Darren and Lyndsey both hit crucial darts allowing Peter and Beverly to lead their team to four straight wins and take their first lead of the match, 8-7.

In game 16, although Beverly and Darren hit 6-counts followed by a 3-In-The-Bed by Darren, Willy would only need a 5-count to take the game and pulled it out with ease to tie up the match at 8 games apiece.  The match was tied up again at 10-10 when Cloud 9 strutted their stuff by winning the next three games to secure a three-game lead in the match.

Willy and Janis continued their hot shooting and Peter’s team did the same. Again, they traded games until 29th and 30th game, where Lyndsey nailed some crucial outs. Cloud 9 won game 30 to take the match 17-13.

Thanks guys and girls for a great match. I look forward to covering your next meeting.
