Dart Players Prefer Dawson’s
By Ty Hughes
Twenty-two teams showed up on the doorstep to Dawson’s Bar & Grill on Saturday, October 15 for their monthly $1,000 Payout dart tournament.
What a great crowd these guys are. This is more of a party than a dart shoot. The celebration supercedes the actual dart tournament itself. Always a good time at Dawson’s whether you’re there to play darts or not.
The bar staff at Dawson’s are awesome. They do a great job of keeping up with a big ol’ thirsty group, dealing out of both sides of the bar. And they’re real good at getting out from behind the bar, cruisin’ the room for dead Indians, y’know, empties.
Dawson’s owner, Kenny was hangin’ with all his dart buddies, and played in the tourney as well. “Ahh, it’s good to be King.” He didn’t have to say it. You could see it in his eyes as he kicked back with a big friendly smile across his face, flanked by beautiful women. Then he got up and promptly kicked my ass at darts, putting Robin and I out of the tournament. Dammit! Oh well, another two-and-out performance turned in by the visiting team.
He and his partner, up-and-comer Talya, went on to great success. This was true for many of the teams that night. The new 19 point team max, brought out some amazing dart shooters, and they were ready to take this thing to the bank! So, I guess the dart tournament was a real focal point for those who actually stood a chance of winning. We settled on the sideline party as spectators after a few very expensive games. Happy to be.
Dawson’s is fortunate enough to cater to lots of high-rated dart players, and Kenny will do whatever it takes for any single one of these guys. And that goes for everyone, lower-rated players included.
He’s toying with the idea of putting up a Parity Draw, so keep your eyes open for that. As a lower-rated player, I personally love the idea of the Parity Draw. But I’m kinda different than most too. It’s a great way to actually compete for the win, but also, and maybe even more important, it’s a chance to play with someone new and probably learn a whole helluva lot about my own game. Can’t speak for the higher-rated player, but if they have the right attitude toward the game and it’s purpose, they’ll support the concept as well.
Oh and by the way, to all you max-point-giveaway-grumblers; when was the last time my 15-mark handicap wasn’t completely evaporated by round six anyway? Sheesh!
And whoever ripped off Kenny’s phone that night: “Really?” Come on man, how about a little kindness and respect toward one another. It’s always sad to see one man’s benevolence be met by someone else’s greed.
For those of you adults, we encourage you to visit Dawson’s for an experience that will have you coming back again and again for a good time with killer people. They host a regular Sunday and Wednesday night dart tournament at Dawson’s, plus their once-a-month $1,000 Payout, not to mention a slew of Challenge Cups!
