Annual Dog Fight is all bark, no bite
By Ty Hughes
It was all testosterone at Sporty’s Beef & Brew on New Years Day 2012. The only estrogen in the house was that of the beautiful waitstaff, and an occasional, non-dart throwing passerby. The rest were all men, and they had a job to do today. It was all about who was to dominate at the dart boards and stand tall, beating their chests after the final dart was thrown.
For the second or third year in a row, Sporty’s Coordinator, Chris Mackie, signed up more teams for the Dog Fight than the corresponding Cat Fight down the street at Cactus Moon. Twenty-seven teams, or 54 players, were hot and heavy in the hunt for bragging rights, plus a bit ‘o cash to help with some of that Christmas debt.
A hard night of partying to ring in the New Year didn’t seem to affect anyone’s ability to zero in on their target that day. All vision seemed to be fully restored as the tournament kicked off around 2pm on January 1, 2012.
Sporty’s all-female staff worked tirelessly to provide a positive experience for each of their visiting guests that day. They always put their best servers in charge of the dart room, guaranteeing everyone an enjoyable, stress and worry free day, clearing the path for them to focus strictly on the task at hand; to kick some tail in darts.
Many did too, but many faltered as you might expect in this game of skill. Those that didn’t bring their “A” game were left to lick their wounds in the spectator’s section away from the action.
While Sarah Morris was cleaning up at the Cat Fight, her Fiance, Jeff Springer, Jr. and his partner Shon fell to Brett and Carlos twice, earning them a respectable, but never satisfying, 3rd Place for the day.
Brett and Carlos, a Medalist 10 and 6 respectively, were on fire, but they would have their toughest task ahead of them. They would now face the seemingly impenetrable dream team of John Husman and Dave Bresee, who firmly occupied the Driver’s Seat and sat waiting for their next victims.
John Husman was fresh off a six-month hiatus from darts to refresh his batteries, and looked ultra-sharp. His partner Dave Bresee, a consummate professional, and longtime subscriber to the game, has the eye of an eagle and shoots with absolute precision. Despite their best laid plans and valiant efforts, Brett and Carlos went down in three quick games in the final match to take 2nd Place. Giving way to John and Dave to become 2012’s newest Dog Fight Champs – way to go boys!
Sporty’s is always a fantastic venue for darts. The management and staff are accommodating and friendly. The food and drinks are top-notch and worthy of your patronage all year round. Check ‘em out for your next big sports day, their gigantic screen TV will put all others to shame! And don’t forget to bring your appetite and a set of darts.
