Ray Cowles/Mary Richeson
Bothell, WA
Ray Cowles and Mary Richeson are two very sweet people, according to their many friends and supporters. Also avid dart players, Ray and Mary are often seen gallivanting around the Bothell/Everett area competing in various tournaments. More recently, however, they’ve taken to assisting Flights Pub with the running of the dart tournaments. In fact, they were both instrumental in the smooth presentation of this year’s Hot August Nights.
The Medallion finally caught up with the busy couple to find out what makes them so lovable. Let’s find out just what makes them so special, shall we?
Ray, Mary, when and how did you two meet each other? We met at Bert’s in 2005, playing in-house darts.
Have you any family in the area? Both our families live in the area.
What activity (outside of darts) gives you the greatest pleasure? Horseshoes, hunting and family.
Has there always been an affection for the game of darts for both of you? Definitely.
From which locations have you played dart leagues over the years? We both started playing on Seattle’s Eastside and now we play in Everett.
Which was your favorite and why? Mary: My favorite was Casa Miguel’s (long gone now). Ray: From Liquid Lime to Lighthouse, they’re all good!
Has it always been Medalist darts for you? Always.
Who can take who in a straight up game of Cricket? Ray, most of the time (he lets me win sometimes!)
What was your greatest achievement within the game so far? Going to State in April, taking 1st Place in Trios with Ty from Flights, and 2nd Place with Ray while seven months pregnant!
Who has been each of your greatest influences in the game, besides each other? Ray: Terry at Bert’s, I started by throwing at the left side of the board, learned a lot from Ed Winkle and currently inspired by shooting with Jeff Springer Jr.
Mary: I would have to say Chuck O’Harran (but I won’t say how long ago!)
Do you look to the other for uplifting or encouragement while shooting? Always.
What are the most important attributes in a favorable Dart Coordinator? A coordinator should be personable, know their players, keep them engaged in the game and encourage fun.
What do you bring to the table as tournament directors? I think we both get along well with people, we play darts to have fun and try to encourage others to do the same whether you win or lose.
Why should people play darts at Flights? First off, Ty the owner is a great guy! We really enjoy the atmosphere at Flights, the good service and all the great people we have met and continue to meet.
Who have been your most favorite teammates over the years? So many, they have all been my favorite!
What is the most important aspect of the game, in your opinion? Having fun and being competitive too.
How have the many changes surrounding darts and dart players in the Northwest over the years affected you? I don’t think the changes have really affected us, we always look forward to each dart match, tournament, etc. because we love the game and the people involved.
What kind of changes do you expect in the way tournaments are offered in the future? We would like to see more Parity Draw tournaments.
How can the average dart player make a difference? Being supportive of your teammates and opponents and voice your opinions positively.
Will we see either of you “In the Pit” next season? We hope so!
Anything else you’d like to say to our readership? Thanks to everyone for supporting us at Flights. “Here’s to a great fall season for everyone!”
Thanks you guys for taking a moment and opening up. We appreciate the opportunity to get to know you just a little better.
Watch for Ray and Mary, give ‘em a high five and let them know that they’re doing a great job.
