Mixed Memorial Couples
By Scott Kringle
May 22nd was a very exciting day at Cloud 9 when their Mixed Memorial Cup team went head to head with Latitude 84 for bragging rights and so much more!
The Mixed Memorial Cup was officially up for grabs! Latitude 84 would attempt to loosen the death grip that Cloud 9 had on their challenge cup.
Mike and Elaine Mayer, of 1st Ave Pub fame, and the originators of this special cup, actually came out to witness their 10-year old brainchild being bandied about. Elaine was reminded of all the work that went into its creation so long ago. They made it clear they were happy to see all the cups being played as regularly as they are these days.
Latitude 84’s team included Michelle Branstetter, Aaron Gregg, Pree Owens, and Lori Real. Cloud 9’s team was made up of a few players your might know, John and Yelena Husman, and Dave and Randi Valantine – a real couples affair.
The point maximum for the Mixed Memorial Cup is 36 points, and Cloud 9 came in at the max. The Latitude 84 team came in 5-points under. Sometimes, it’s just better to max it out.
In this match, Cloud 9 would quickly exploit their point advantage, holding a 10-2 lead after twelve games. Never out of Cloud 9’s control, the Husman’s and the Valantine’s went on to win decisively, 17-5.
It went fast and furious at times, giving Latitude several chances to take out more games than revealed by the score.
John Husman said he would not be on the team the next time it’s challenged. Both Dave and Randi rolled up and he was stepping aside so they could continue to shoot together. Great sportsmanship on John’s part. Nice job by both teams. Good luck to Cloud 9 in their next challenge match.
