4×7 Cup upset

By Scott Kringle

Ringers took on the defending 4×7 Cup Champions, Flights Pub, on Sunday, January 22. Flights championship team was comprised of four great shooters, including Brian Arganti, Bill Livingston, Rick Lingle, and Jamie Nelson. They would have their hands full since Ringers would be represented by Gary White, Dustin Curtis, Brett Brophy, and Jarrod Schmidt.

Winning the cork was Flights, and Brian opened the match with one of them fancy Hat Tricks. On the surface, it looked like it would be a quick match. Bill Livingston put up a 3-In-The-Black on the second 901 game, but Ringers would not be intimidated, hanging in there and fought to the bitter end and still lost the game.

Flights team pounded the board, taking a 4-1 lead. Everyone really stepped up their game. But like most Challenge Cups, it really takes a lot to gain control of a match, and after 10 games, it was all tied up.

Both teams were playing extremely well. Neither team looked like they would pull away, tying up the match at 8, then 9, again at 10, and 11 games. By the 25th game, Flights was holding onto a slim 13-12 lead. And by game 33, it was all tied up again at 16 wins each! This was turning out to be exactly like Ringer’s Players Cup match the day before when the absolute last game would determine the winner.

This time, the results would favor Ringers and they came out on top, winning the match to take the 4×7 Cup back to Mountlake Terrace with them when they left. Of all five Cup matches over that particular weekend, this was the only upset – quite a testament to the tenacity among Ringer’s shooters. Nice job by both teams.

Ringers is putting an emphasis on their Challenge Cup play in 2012, hoping to scoop up as many Cups as possible, so keep your eye out for these guys!
