A wing and a prayer
Popular radio personality hosts wing-eating contest at 13th Ave Pub

By Scott Kringle

Question! What do you get when you cross four pounds of spicy hot chicken wings, two and a half pounds of fries with one very popular 95.7 KJR radio host at the 13th Ave Pub in Lynnwood? You get a wing-eating contest and a rowdy party.
On Saturday, May 7th, the 13th Ave Pub was the site of an exciting chicken-wing eating contest sponsored by KJR AM and hosted by radio personality, Dave “Softy” Mahler.
“T” and Javier spent all morning cooking and spicing up the wings for the big contest. The rules were very simple. Teams of two have to eat four pounds of spicy chicken wings and two and a half pounds of french fries faster than any other team. Initially, there were nine teams signed up, but two backed out after realizing the task at hand (Wimps!). So, seven teams accepted the challenge of gorging themselves with the bird and the taters.
The third place team of Jim and Vince finished their wings in 8.25 minutes. Coming in a close second was the team of Joe and Mike finishing up their eats in 7.44 minutes and the first place team, with the time of 6.38 minutes, was that of Brad and Jon.
Pub owner, Wayne, thought he had the upper hand by picking up the cook, “T”, to be his partner, but in the end, all Wayne really wanted was some free wings. “Softy” teamed up with Russ and did okay, but he had eaten a huge burger and fries just 20 minutes before the contest (What was he thinking?). The prizes were Sonics playoff tickets, Mariners tickets, $25 gift cards to the team stores, T-shirts and CD’s.
The place was rockin’ from start to finish. If you were one of the unlucky few who didn’t make it out to the contest, you really missed out on some great food and laughs.
