PICKLED ONION; RENTON, WA By Ty Hughes The Pickled Onion threw $500 cash into the pot Saturday, January 19 and invited all their dart-throwin’ buddies in for some elbow rubbin’. The Pickled Onion, if you haven’t been yet, is a great location to unwind and enjoy a comfortable atmosphere full of hugs, smiles and bustling activity. The place is filled with young, beautiful blonde babes and the guys that follow, not to mention about forty dart players and miscellaneous, more intimate confrontations going on all around you. Darts is serious business here, and business is good. If you are one to throw a few and test your aim, then you really oughta check this place out. You can sidle up to someone who’s been playing the game for many years at any given time and probe them for techniques and strategies. Believe me, they’ll be happy to talk darts with you and share their knowledge. Dart players LOVE to talk darts. So, all these folks gathered together for one reason or another while Mark and Klause manage the bar in style. Everyone is treated extremely well at the Pickled Onion on Sunset Blvd. in Renton. Sean, the Pickled Onion’s owner, is very accessible, both personally and professionally. Sean is one of those unique owners that eats, drinks and plays with his customers on a regular basis. In spite of his salty tongue, which always reminds me of those British films where everybody is cussing all the time, Sean is an easy guy to get to know and is always good for a shot of truth. Wether you want it or not, he’ll always let you know where he stands on any particular subject. Cal roams the premises regularly as well. It’s easy to spot Cal, with his classic, urban look. You could put a white T-shirt on this guy, roll a pack of cigs in the sleeve and you’d swear it was 1955. Cal’s got a great personality; genuine and caring, not to mention, he’s a fungi, I mean, fun guy. Just ask his widespread fan-base. Everybody loves Cal, especially his new main squeeze. Larry Mead, Bellingham dart legend and recent transplant to the Seattle metro area, brought his new fiance Karen, and her son Eddie to the party. Both very sweet and engaging. We may be seeing quite a bit of Larry ‘round these here parts - this guy is a dart playin’ maniac. Well, plus he’s pretty darn good too. I guess if I was good at something, I’d probably do it all the time. But I’m not, so I don’t. Questions? The layout at the Pickled Onion is great for just about any sort of mood you might be in or atmosphere you’re looking for. There’s a couch in front of the big screen with all the games on, just like home. Someone waiting on you hand and foot, all the time, great food and drink at good prices. They’ve obviously got lots of dartboards on two sides of the bar, pool tables, video games, countertop gaming. Just realize, that anytime you stop into the Pickled Onion, you WILL experience the elusive dart player or fifty and there will always be people hanging out, relaxing. So, there was this dart tournament I was talking about... Jeff Christian, in his signature semi-formal attire and his parter, Kelly Kahuli took on John and Yelena (ever heard of them?) for third or better. If you’ve even walked out your front door, you’ve probably ran into John and Yelena. Anyway, they beat up on Jeff and Kelly putting them out with $120 cash to play with. Then it was on to the finals match where Sean and Larry sat atop the field. Despite Larry’s ten White Horses that day, they couldn’t handle the cutest couple in the whole world. John and Yelena sent them packin’ with 2nd Place and $175, taking 1st Place and $300 of their own. Come out and play! |
