Why Play Steel-tip?
Friendship, competition, intensity for starters. Darts is first of all a challenge between yourself and the board. Truthfully, you are only really trying to outdo your own personal best. It's always a one-on-one game - you and you.
Other competitors are thrown in just to give you a challenge - to offer something - a throw, a score, a stance, a focus - to match. Darts is a test that demands you repeat an earlier great job, or a disappointment that spurs you to do better the next time at the line. Every trip to the line is a time to concentrate, to focus, to get inside and control your body and mind for their best performance.
All of this intensity is best realized in the steel-tip version of the sport. "Purists" of the sport feed on this challenge. They may do so with a hugely "go inside of yourself" attitude or a flippant attitude as they approach the line. But, every spectator knows that as you approach the line, you're pulling yourself together, you're concentrating and organizing mind and muscle that deserves respect.
Every shooter will quietly evaluate the thrower's ability to not just hit a planned target, but to gather the personal focus every stand at the line deserves. It is this respect for the other's intention that makes all darts so grand; and, it is no more apparent then in steel tip darts.
These combatants can focus, concentrate and perform in a fashion that is awesome. Their respect for the other is one of the basis for the superb sportsmanship attitude that prevails in all aspects of the game.
For intensity, try steel-tip. For a little more relaxed time - try soft-tip. But, try darts. It's an experience you'll find yourself repeating over and over again. And, know that anyone in the sport will welcome you grandly to their ranks - it's a sport that loves new people and respects the willingness of those new shooters to test themselves.
