Eighth Annual Don Henson Classic Incredibly Successful by Mike Bates
The annual Don Henson Classic Dart Tournament was held at Sixshooters on 35th Ave. and Peoria to honor a great man and friend. Each year, the event is held as a celebration of the life of Don Henson and what he meant to the community and his friends.
The event is not a classic, however the name, Classic, reflects what a class act our friend truly was. It also brings together both of the dart worlds steel and soft tip. The steel tip darts event happened on Friday, and on Saturday it was soft-tip. Many folks played both nights. A total of 112 entrants played for over $2,500 in prize money. There were drawings held all day long on Saturday, with some fantastic prizes, including a 27 color TV,won by Big E and a Valley Cougar dart board, won by Rik Scherbing. The event raised close to $1,500 to be held in a fund that is used to help various charities. In the past, event organizers have donated the money to the Crisis Nursery, Food Bank, the Special Olympics, the Cancer Society, and various individuals in need. We are trying to do something with the Make-a-Wish Foundation as well. All money, including the coin drop, is either paid out in the tournaments or deposited in the fund. We feel that giving a little to several sources is better than having it all go to one. Please give me (Mike Bates) a call at (623) 847-2077, or email me at [email protected] if you know of a charity. There are three main sponsors for the Classic. Sixshooters, provides the most suitable location for this particular event. They have plenty of room, great service and a great atmosphere. They add money to each event and donate money as well. Secondly, the people at Troy Vending do lots of work before, during and after the tournament. It is special to them because Don worked for Troy Vending when he passed away. Lastly, is Dart Master, Inc. who prints the raffle tickets, sets up boards, gathers raffle prizes and helps to get the players to the event. Jimmy Damore and Marty Scarborough edged out Jay Moredock and Martin Bedoni to take the main event. Jimmy also teamed with Tom Slominski to win the Steel Tournament on Friday.
