A little history, just for fun
Gary Erwin
I asked Mike Bates to share with me a little history of forty-two seasons of Masters’ accomplishments and I thought I would share some of these with everyone. What is impressive to me is the fact that there are many names listed that I have never even heard of, not to mention some names that I had no idea were ever a part of the Masters.
Some of the names are listed multiple times and those you would expect to hear, but every once in a while, a name pops up that you would never expect. Seriously, even Mike Bates has a few records?
No worries – I called for an audit on those particular records just to confirm, as I was surprised too.
I reviewed a total of 130 individual records and some of the names you would see often and with varied accomplishments. As a matter of a fact, out of 130 records, five players hold 58 percent of all the records held, and not necessarily the five you might think.
So who are the Fab Five? Lucky Newbury owns 22 individual records, with nine of those being first place in different categories; Mike Bates owns 18 different records, including all 42 seasons played and six White Horses in one season; John Gray owns 17 different records to include a 4.85 for one season; Dave Fatum owns 10 records, and Rick Kerska holds nine records to wrap up the Fab Five.
Take a look at some more of the accomplishments seen over the past 42 seasons:

There are numerous others and if you would like, please let me know and I will share them, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
So, who will be next to become part of a great tradition? Here is a group of people that get together every season and draft out a league of players who sign up and want to give it a shot. It is by far the most competitive league in Arizona, if not nationally and it is a league recognized at every national tournament played.
Why? Due to the accomplishments of those who have come before us – and it will continue by those who challenge themselves in the future.
