In honor of Don, a class act

By Mike Bates

H e was The Man! A man whose reputation preceded him. A man who many looked up to, and rightfully so. A man who will always be remembered.
When you say the name Don Henson in the dart community, people usually smile. He was that kind of man, with that kind of presence. He was a hard worker and always took the good with the bad. He accepted winning with class and handled losing with dignity.
The Don Henson Classic takes place next month. It is not a memorial tournament. It is a tournament in his honor, it is a tournament to keep Don in our hearts, it is a tournament to tell the young players about the man that taught us so much about life.
Dozens of stories will be told, hundreds of darts will be thrown and a good time will surely be had by all. That is what Don would have wanted.
We will be running two tournaments, a warm-up on Friday and the Main Event on Saturday. Three, if you count the Second Chance shoot. We will have raffles to raise money for charity; either the American Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
And we will do a toast (or a hundred) to the man, our friend, Don Henson. If you can’t or don’t want to play in the tournament, try to make it to the toast. Don touched many of us in our lives and people like him should never be forgotten.
See you there!
